Scott was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK. I flew in to Anchorage Thursday, May 20th so that we could drive out of AK. He was PCSing...meaning he had a new base assignment. We had a busy weekend ahead of us before our big drive out that Monday. We woke up early Friday & headed to his shop so he could say some good-byes and then took off to Flat Top Mountain. Boy oh boy were we in for it! First off, I wore my black Nike Shox but shoulda worn my snow boots. Yup, there's snow ( a good amount of snow I might add!) up in the mountains in May. Only in Alaska! So we started hiking Flat Top and we get to our first flat part of the mountain. We take in the beautiful view for a few minutes while also catching our breaths! Off we go again following a group of people. There was a small group of people coming down the mountain & I remember a girl telling us to be careful it's slippery up there. I have to admit I was a lil' nervous! So we get to this part where the path kinda goes to the right and then there's an off-beat path to the left. Well we see people going up the mountain to the left & people coming down on the right. So what do we think...you must go to the left to go up and you come back around on the right side! So without really thinking we head down the off-beat path to the left. Yea, BIG mistake! In some areas there was snow up to my knees (I'm 5ft) and we had to hike in this! We get up this huge mountain side of snow and stop on the side of the mountain catching our breaths once again! While doing so, we take in another beautiful view of Anchorage and saying out loud, "OMG, we just climbed up that!" So now we are on the side of the mountain and up ahead on another part of the mountain we can see a group of people climbing rocks, maneuvering their bodies through these huge rocks. What do we have to do! We have to hike this steep hill that has loose wet gravel and no side rails. Oh and did I mention that the path was very thin in width...we couldn't stand side by side if we tried! Scott is in front of me and I'm behind him literally dying inside. My left foot kept sliding slowly to the edge where the drop off of the mountain was. How he stayed calm, I have no idea but thank you Lord for keeping him calm! About half way up this steep hill I look up and see it gets worse. I stopped at a rock and told Scott, "I can't do this anymore." I was freaking out. All I wanted was my daddy to come and rescue me! Yes I said daddy....I'm a daddy's girl :) So he tells me to stay put while he goes up ahead to look. He says, "Yea it's turn around time!" LOL....so now some how we have to go down this steep hill that we just spent over an hour coming up! He gets behind me and starts heading down slowly. Picture this: we are down on our hands & feet slowly sliding down the side of the hill. Our hands are wet, muddy and cold! I'm freaking out cuz my foot won't stay put therefore I have no where to go! What does my amazing man do! He finds rocks and places them where my feet should go. He holds the rock in place and tells me to put my foot on top of the rock. This works...I'm not sliding anymore!!! Honestly I don't even know how long it took us to get down that part of the mountain but we made it and now we had to go down the side with all the snow. That was the fun part. I just jumped from one spot to another giggling. I think he thought I was nuts but that part was fun for me plus I was overcoming shock from both of us surviving that climb. We get back down to the area where we first stopped at when we were going up. He puts his backpack down and gets out a Dove chocolate. Our favorite :) He eats one then asked if I wanted one. Me pass up chocolate?! So I take my 1st Dove. Then he grabs for another and gives me another. While I'm eating my 2nd Dove, I'm watching this father walk around with his 2 children. He goes in the bag for his 3rd. He points over to the right of me and says what's that. I look and say, "I don't see anything." While turning back, he gives me my 3rd Dove. What's wrapped inside my 3rd Dove? A diamond ring! Right then and there my best friend proposed to me on Flat Top Mountain. I still have the Dove wrapper. It says, "If nobody is perfect then you must be nobody!"
